Phorium t. 'Jester', Coleus 'Wild Kiwi', Zantedeschia 'Flame', Helenium 'Mardi Gras', Heuchera 'Amber Waves'

Sometimes you have to break the rules. This grouping combines shade and sun lovers in hues of tangerine, gold, terra cotta and chartreuse. It works aesthetically because the colors are all warm, but the varying textures provide interest. It works culturally only because the bed is situated so the shade lovers (Coleus and Heuchera) get the less intense morning sun, while the taller sun worshippers (Phormium, Helenium and calla lily) protect the more diminutive shade lovers in the heat of the afternoon.
